The Sports Bra Size Guide: Band, Cup and the Bounce Test
The sports bra is activewear’s most important purchase and its most commonly mis-sized: studies keep finding a large majority of women in the wrong size, paying in bounce, dig and distraction. The sizing decoder — band math, cup honesty and the tests that settle it.

The Band Does the Work
The engineering truth: 70-80% of support comes from the BAND, not the straps — a band that rides up at the back or lifts away at the front is a size too big no matter what the label says. The fit standard: snug on the loosest hook (the bra stretches with wear; the tighter hooks are its retirement plan), level all the way around, two fingers under it and no more.
The Two-Measurement Method
The tape ritual: underbust snug (the band number) and fullest-bust relaxed (cup = the difference) — then the brand-reality adjustment (sports bra sizing varies as wildly as leggings; your measurements are the starting point, the size chart is the translation, and the notes-app log is the archive). Compression styles run different math than encapsulation (cup-based) styles — bigger busts generally get better support from encapsulation or hybrid designs.

The Fitting-Room Tests
The five-minute exam: the jump test (ten jumps — bounce should feel controlled, not free-range), the overhead reach (the band that rides up fails), the strap dig check (straps assist, they shouldn’t excavate), the two-finger band rule, and the breathing honesty (supportive is snug; suffocating is a size small). High-impact days demand the full test; a bra that passes jumping passes everything.
The Lifecycle Rules
The keep-and-replace math: sports bras die quietly (elastic fatigue is gradual — the bounce creeping back IS the retirement notice; 9-12 months of regular wear is a typical lifespan), wash cold and hang dry (the dryer is the elastic’s enemy number one), rotate two-plus bras (recovery days for elastic extend everything), and re-measure yearly (bodies change; the size from three years ago is a rumor). The right bra disappears during the workout — that’s the entire test.
Band snug on loosest hook, jump ten times, log the brand math, retire at the bounce. The sports bra was never a guess — it’s two measurements and one honest jump test.
